BIOGRAPHY Sarah Manners, born 25th August 1975, Birmingham, United Kingdom, is a well known British television actress.
She has one elder sister, Kate and two younger brothers Guy and Tom. She was educated at Bluecoat School in Harborne, and later left King Edward's Grammar School with ten GCSE's and four A-Levels before studying for a BA in drama at Central School of Speech and Drama. Her first acting roles came in the shape of the film Sugar Sugar in which she played the lead and TV show Touch and Go. Her first regular work, however, was in the BBC's weekday soap Doctors. As receptionist Joanna Helm, she helped her dying grandmother commit suicide with drugs stolen from the surgery, then had a nervous breakdown and became addicted to tranquilisers.
Then she played Sam Marsden in Moving On. She says of the role, 'Everyone took her for a prostitute because she had a bag full of sex toys but she was an Ann Summers-style salesgirl.' Her most serious role to date was that of murderess Tracey Andrews in Granada's Real Crimes docudrama screened in 2002. Andrews stabbed fiance Lee Harvey during a row in 1996, then told police he had been killed in a road rage attack. Sarah, relished the opportunity to play such a role, 'It was a real opportunity to show so many emotions -her softer side, her aggression, her relationship with Lee and how it went sour. Roles that push you as an actress are fantastic.' Before making herself a household name in Casualty, Sarah also played gold digging air hostess KC in Sky One's raunchy airline soap, Mile High.
Sarah joined Casualty in February 2003. It was a pivotal moment in her career. The offer to join the prime time Saturday night drama was her biggest break since leaving drama school. 'I couldn't believe it,' said Sarah. 'To say I was chuffed is an understatement.' Receptionist Bex Reynolds, a former beauty queen and former footballer's wife, created a huge storm at the hospital when she first made her debut. Bex thinks her job is beneath her, is a gossip, offensive and has been known to follow unsavoury patients around with an air freshener.'I don't know how long she'd last in a real hospital because she's damn rude,' says Sarah. 'She even resents the fact that she has to work. She'd much rather be doing something more glamorous'.
During her time on the show, Sarah has enjoyed some fantastic storylines including her relationship with ex-husband, paramedic Luke Warren and her diabetic diagnosis. But it's her final storyline which has shown off her acting abilities to the extreme. That of the acquaintance rape of Bex from her best friend, Claire's brother - Peter Guildford. The incident which has left Bex a shadow of her former self is set to continue till her dramatic departure in Summer 2005. The horrific scenes were filmed as Sarah was also performing on Strictly Come Dancing, and although it meant a tough filming schedule, Sarah thoroughly enjoyed her dancing steps and the challenge of such a shocking story on Casualty. 'I'd spend all day crying on Set and then have to fit in a few hours' dancing,' says Sarah. 'One minute I was looking the most glamorous I've ever been, and the next I was looking awful! But I loved it, I much prefer looking rubbish because then I get to act and show off more!'
Her personal life is also just as bright, having married her partner, Ben O'Sullivan - who works in computer sales - in June 2003. It looks as if this is just the start of things to come for remarkable actress, Sarah Manners... View GALLERY:
